THE FIRST AMERICAN REVOLUTION

After tracing the economic background of the period of the First American Revolution, the author describes the nature and technique of colonial resistance to taxation and the social meaning of the struggle for national independence. The various stages of the war, from Lexington to Yorktown, are sketched quickly. The study concludes with a brief analysis of the tradition of 76 and its importance today. One of the most interesting features of the volume is the reproduction of posters issued by the Sons of Liberty and the Committees of Correspondence, and also leaflets warning against profiteering and urging the boycott of Tory merchants. Of considerable value to the student is the other supplementary material, including primary sources like the Virginia Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence, as well as a carefully selected bibliography for further reading and study.
