Fisher King, a mysterious figure in the Arthurian Legend, had been maimed in battle. His only pastime was fishing. Also emascu-ated by a war wound - and finding relaxation in fishing - is the celebrated photographer, Saul Henchman. Henchman, accompanied by Barberina Rookwood, a beautiful dancer much younger than himself, who has given up her career for him, are on a cruise round the British Isles. Their story is seen for the most part through the eyes of Valentine Beals, a writer of historical thrillers. Beals is haunted with the idea that Henchman is a contemporary version of the Fisher King, whose mystic destiny involves in love, ambition, desire, sacrifice, an incongruous cast of fellow-passengers.
