Beautihal and authoritative — with its more than 500 spectacular full-color illustrations and 186 drawings and with its rich, encyclopedic text by a distinguished ichthyologist and a notable writer of natural history—this book will stand as an incomparable guide to the vast, mysterious, and exotic world of fresh and salt water fishes.
From the Greenland shark in the Arctic waters of the Atlantic to the African mudskipper, the yeUow bass in southern Mississippi, and the tiniest spring minnow, here are more than 1,000 species—representing all the 43 orders and the 212 most commonly known families— revealed and described in comprehensive detail: their history (from their first appearance —the most ancient group of vertebrates—millions of years ago); the latest facts about classification and number (more than 100 new species are discovered each year); complete, vital, and unusual information about family characteristics, size (from the minute goby less than half an inch long to giant whale sharks spanning nearly 70 feet), scales, coloration, age, growth, senses and nerves, migration ("group travel"), and habitat; how fishes swim, from the African catfish swimming upside down to flying fishes gliding above the surface; how and what they eat, from the stoneroller grubbing in rocky riffles to the various predators cutting their prey; the sounds they make; the dazzling range of their beauty; their tremendous ecological importance to the human race; and more.

Throughout, the material is organized and arranged with the reader's convenience in mind. Norman Weaver's almost 700 remarkable paintings and drawings depict in brilliantly precise detail fishes belonging to all the orders—and members of nearly every fanuly. All the species are listed by both their common and their scientific names in the text and with each picture.
Together, the absolutely authoritative text and the stunning paintings and drawings make Fishes of the World an indispensable and irresistible volume—for anglers, for ichthyologists, and for anyone with even the slightest interest in the wondrous world of fresh and salt water fishes.
Edward C. Migdalski has traveled around the world on collecting expeditions as an ichthyologist with Yale University's Bingham Océanographie Laboratory and Peabody Museum of Natural History. He is internationally known in sport-fishing circles, and serves as a director and chief judge of the world's leading giant tuna tournaments. Mr. Migdalski is the author of four books, including Angler's Guide to the Fresh Water Sport Fishes of North America and Angler's Guide to the Salt Water Game Fishes: Atlantic and Pacific, as well as more than 100 articles.
George S. Fighter is a former instructor in zoology and conservation at Miami University of Ohio, a contributor to the World Book Encyclopedia, and the author and editor of many nature books, guides, and articles.
Norman Weaver is one of the world's outstanding painter-illustrators in the field of natural history. He spent more than two years in the preparation of these paintings and drawings.
