THE GENE CIVILIZATION
By taking over medicine and agriculture, molecular biology has become the business of society: genetic engineering is changing our food and our environment; fertilization and reproduction are being manipulated; there is the danger that the tracking down of hereditary diseases might lead to systematic labeling of populations.

François Gros is a member of the Institute, and professor at the College de France and the Pasteur Institute. He was head of the Pasteur Institute from 1976 to 1981. His work deals with the biochemistry of higher organisms. From 1981 to 1986 he served as scientific adviser to Pierre Mauroy and Laurent Fabius, and in this capacity was directly involved in the negotiations on major international projects. In 1974, he published Nucleic Acid Biosyntheses: Genetic Replication and Transcription (Éditions Hermann) and, in 1986, The Secrets of the Gene (Éditions Odile Jacob).
