Certain characteristics persist throughout the history of any nation's painting, even in periods when an 'international style' prevails. This book provides within a single volume a fully illustrated and authoritative survey of the British tradition of painting from the Middle Ages to the present, an achievement of which the richness and vitality have frequently been underrated.
Research in recent years has led to fundamental revaluations in the general assessments of certain periods and artists.
This applies most markedly perhaps to the Elizabethan period; to certain artists of the eighteenth century - such as Wright of Derby and Stubbs - who are now seen to have been greatly underrated; to the complex give and take between Classicism and Romanticism; and to an entirely new approach to Victorian painting.
The seven contributors to this book, all experts in their particular fields, have taken full advantage of this greatly improved state of knowledge. Dr Alexander has written a brilliantly .concise article on medieval painting; Dr Piper's sectioiLon Tudor art is based on his own research and that of Dr Roy Strong, while Sir Oliver Millar, author of the contribution on Stuart painting, is himself mostly responsible for discussions of this period over the last twenty years. In Dr Webster's account of what used to be called the Golden Age of British Painting, full consideration is taken of new light recently shed on the major artists, while Dr Bird's discussion of the Romantics is both fresh and profound and drawn from wide-ranging research. Alan Bowness, usually associated with a great deal of original work on the twentieth century, views Victorian painting with critical sympathy, and his grasp of abstract formal values is all the more valuable in this context. The final section by Grey Gowrie brings the story up to date and gives a lucid guide to the movements in British art of this century.
The text, which is fully illustrated throughout, is both extremely readable and scholarly, while avoiding art-historical jargon, and the book should prove invaluable both to the general reader and to the specialist. Vissza
