In the wake of the Fischer Controversy on the origins of the First World War there emerged in West Germany a younger generation of historians who took a critical 'revisionist' view of the Bismarckian Empire and began to analyse the political development of the Hohenzollern monarchy against the background of the country's social and economic power-structures. Professor Wehler became one of the most prominent exponents of this approach and his structural analysis of the Kctiserreich created a considerable stir when it was first published ten years ago. It has since, with its incisive and rigorous analysis, become a classic in the field.

Hans-Ulrich Wehler was born in 1931 and studied at the University of Cologne, Bonn and Athens/Ohio, USA. He received a Ph.D. in History

THE AUTHOR
Hans-Ulrich Wehler was born in 1931 and studied at the University of Cologne, Bonn and Athens/Ohio, USA. He received a Ph.D. in History
and Sociology and taught at the University of Cologne and the Free University of Berlin. Since 1971 he has been Professor of History at the University of Bielefeld. He has also held guest professorships at the Universities of Harvard (1972), Princeton (1976) and Stanford
(1983/84).
He has been General Editor of numerous series and has written widely on
the history of Prussia, the German Empire, German and American Imperialism and on theoretical and methodological problems of historiography and related fields in the social sciences.
His best-known works include Bismarck und der Imperialismus (5th ed.,
1983), Krisenherde des Kaiserreichs 1871-1918 (2nd ed., 1979), Der Aufstiej! des amerikanischen Imperialismus 1865-1900 {197A)., Grundziige Aer amerikanischen Aussenpolitik (1983). Vissza
