The Great Palace, built in the mid-nineteenth century to the design of the well-known Russian architect Konstantin Thon, is one of the most interesting landmarks in the Moscow Kremlin. It is the seat of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, the highest legislative body of the Soviet state, and of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR, the largest of the Soviet republics. It is in the Great Palace that talks between leaders of the Communist Party. the Soviet Government and foreign delegations take place; large state receptions and all-union conferences of scientists, artists and the foremost workers are held; and high governmental awards are presented. The state St George, St Vladimír and St Catherine Halls, as well as the State and Priváté Apartments, are lavishly decorated with mouldings, murals, statues, vases, exquisite furniture, and numerous objets d'art.
