This corner of the Appalachian Mountains in North Carolina and Tennessee is a corner of America where times seems to have stood still. Even before the white man came, the Cherokee Indians generally avoided the Smoky Mountains, not because they didn't love them, but because of forbidding legends told around their campfires.
When white settlers finally did arrive, the lush forests and high mountains seemed to absorb them and freeze them in time.
Their fellow Americans didn't discover the Smokies until a National Park was established there in the 1930s. And what they discovered was a place out of time, a place where natural beauty is more natural, more beautiful than almost any place east of the Mississippi. They discovered the descendants of the first white settlers there, too, and in the process came face to face with their own forebears.
