Numerous topics within these sections, including Chinese ancestor worship, religious systems of North American tribes, and English village communities, range across the whole spectrum of communal life.
Notwithstanding the entertainment value of these intriguing and quirky tales, the author's main intention is to show how custom and belief relate to human experience. She demonstrates how, for instance, a gardener swearing at his lettuce, thrashing his young walnut trees, sowing peas in the wane of the moon, or planting potatoes on Good Friday, is putting into practice time-honoured beliefs, not only about trees and plants, but about life and death.
