The State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg ranks with the Louvre, the British Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art as one of the world's most important museums. Beginning with the 225 paintings purchased in 1764 to hang in the Winter Palace of Catherine the Great, the museum's rich collections now comprise some three milhon objects and works of art, including renowned masterpieces from all over the world. Baphael's and Leonardo's Madonnas, Titian's St. Sebastian, and Bembrandt's Return of the Prodigal Son, as well as paintings by Picasso, Matisse and Van Gogh, are just a few of the suherb works of Western European art in the Hermitage. Treasures from all over the world are housed in the museum, including the unique collection of Greek jewellery from the Black Sea region, finds from Central Asia, Scythian gold artefacts, Persian carpets, ancient Egyptian statues, Chinese manuscripts, Byzantine applied art and Bussian fine and decorative art.
