During the Nazi occupation of Bohemia and Moravia, Czech Roma became victims of a holocaust started in the Protectorate's gypsy camps at Lety and Hodonin and continued with mass extermination in the gypsy camp in Auschwitz-Birkenau as well as in numerous concentration camps dispersed throughout the entire territory of the Third Reich. Referring to available literature, archive materials and memoirs, this hook describes the martyrdom and systematic harassment of Czech Romany men, women and children interned at Lety, Hodonin and Auschwitz-Birkenau.
The author of this book, Ctibor Necas, PhD., university professor emeritus, was born in 1933 at Rakvice in the Moravian district of Bfeclav. Following graduation from a grammar school he read history and Czech at the School of Liberal Arts (Philosophical Faculty) of Brno's Masaryk University and was a Copernicus postgraduate at the Jagellonian University in Cracow, Poland. He taught at secondary schools and as university assistant, finishing his teaching career at his alma mater where, however, he could be named assistant and later full professor of general history only after 1989. His research and publications deal with various modern and contemporary history subjects. Lecturing on the holocaust of Czech and Slovak Roma at numerous conferences, Prof Necas has also written a number of monographs on the subject, including The Fate of Czech and Slovak Ronaa (1981), Czechoslovak Roma in 1938-1945 (1994), The Tragedy of the Lety and Hodonin Gypsy Camps (1995). Together with D. Holy, he is also the co-author of Sung in Accusation (1993).
