The Hungárián National Museum, founded in 1802, is one of the oldest public collections in Europe. It was from this institution that the largest mu-seums in Budapest (the Museum of Fine Arts, the Hungárián National Gallery, the Ethnographic Museum, etc.) originated to become independent specialized museums. After 1949 the Hungárián National Museum developed its scope of activity in the fields of archaeology and history, and today it collects ánd preserves the archaeological and his-torical remains of peoples living on the territory of Hungary from the palaeolithic age to the present. They include many an internationally known piece such as the cranial bone of the Vértesszőlős Ar-chanthropus, the Scythian golden stags, the gold bars from Krászna, the ornamental brooch from Szilágysomlyó, the crown received from the Byzantine Emperor Constantine IX Monomachos, the ecclesi-astical choir stalls from Nyírbátor and Beethoven's fortepiano.
