It is a book which has overcome time and fiction, to the extent that the reader feels himself a Román reading about contemporary Rome. The author uses letters - journals, love letters, invitations to dinner, letters of abuse, anonymous letters, women's gossip - and through them creates the Rome of 45 b.c. But this is not just a skilful evocation of the past. It is primarily a portrait of Julius Caesar seen through the eyes of friends, enemies, lovers, and himself. It is the story of a man who believes that he will be killed but refuses to protect himself, who is Supreme Pontiff but an agnostic, who puts aside delusions of grandeur and honestly disbelieves in his own greatness.
