The sometimes physical and frequently bitter conflict between reporters and government officials in Vietnam has been aptly described as an "information war." It is also a conflict that has application to the American domestic scene—wherever the reporter's function of pursuing and disseminating information is at odds with officials or bureaucratic tendencies to cover up, censor, or "manage" news.
The author, an experienced journalist, exposes the hazards to democracy which ensue from the manipulation, by government or by the press itself, of information vital to decision-making. Citing the danger when doctored information is fed into the machinery of government or to the public, he reveals self-deception at the top levels of government and the perils to society's well-being.
