THE
JAZZ BOOK
From New Orleans to Rock and Free Jazz
by Joachim Berenclt
For over twenty years Joachim Berendt's book on jazz has been the standard work. Translated into eleven languages, it has sold almost one million copies. This fourth edition, which follows the development of jazz into the 70s, is virtually a new book. Changes have been made on almost every page, approximately 50,000 words have been added and more than 150 new musicians and groups have been inti'oduced.
The new Wtality that has infused the jazz scene in the past ten years has made these extensive revisions necessary. From Dixieland to the newest forms of rock-influenced electronic music, there has been a resurgence of interest in all forms of jazz. Now a new generation is listening to swing, bop, cool jazz and the big band music of the '40s and '50s while there is an equal demand for the contemporary sound of Miles Davis, Omette Coleman, Herbie Hancock, Pharaoh Sanders, Wayne Shorter, Sun Ra,... JOACHIM ERNST BERENDT, an internationally known authority on jazz, was born in Berlin in 1922. He is the author of eleven books, and his record productions, "J. E. Berendt presents . . . ," have been highly acclaimed the world over. In a poll conducted by the magazine Jazz 6- Pop, he was voted Europe's best jazz producer. Berendt was Musical Director of the Jazz Festival at the Munich Olympic Games in 1972. He lives in West Germany but travels extensively and seldom misses an important jazz concert or festival.

HELMUT and BARBARA BREDIGKEIT translated the new sections of this book.

AFRICAN MUSIC
A People's Art
By FRANCIS BEBEY translated by Josephine Bennett
Here is a compact, highly readable introduc- j^jf tion to traditional African music—its forms, pF musicians, instruments and its place in the whole of African life. In opening this "unknown and exciting world—a world where we can leam more about mankind," Francis Bebey emphasizes the natural tie >,that exists between the human voice and the speech patterns of African nations and the music to which they gave rise. The book is profusely illustrated with photographs and contains an excellent discography of African music available today.
Francis Bebey, author of the delightful novel Agatha Moudio's Son, and other books, is employed by UNESCO. He is also a journalist, broadcaster, composer and guitarist.
Cloth Edition $10.
