TANK BUSTERS
What are 'tank busters'? In the terms of this book, they are freshwater fishes that present a challenge to fishkeepers, principally because they grow larger than most aquarium fish. Of course, 'large' is a relative term. To someone familiar with keeping 4cm(1.6in) neon tetras, the 35cm(14in) tinfoil barb seems large by comparison. The Manual Of
TANK BUSTERS
What are 'tank busters'? In the terms of this book, they are freshwater fishes that present a challenge to fishkeepers, principally because they grow larger than most aquarium fish. Of course, 'large' is a relative term. To someone familiar with keeping 4cm(1.6in) neon tetras, the 35cm(14in) tinfoil barb seems large by comparison. For fishkeepers with higher aspirations, perhaps the lm(39in) redtailed catfish more closely fits the bill. But sheer size is not the sole qualification for inclusion in the 'tank buster' club. This book features active shoaling fish, such as pacu, that need space to thrive, and also features the cichlids and other territorial fishes that need to establish their own living spaces in order to feel at home in the competitive aquarium environment.
The first part of the book looks at the practical aspects of keeping 'tank busters', from selecting the most appropriate fish in the first place to recognizing and treating a range of common pests and diseases. Other subjects covered here include constructing and locating a large tank, choosing suitable lighting and heating equipment, installing filtration and water management systems, making the right aquascaping decisions and following the best feeding strategy.
The second part focuses on a selection of freshwater fishes that qualify as 'tank busters'. These include lungfishes, sturgeons, paddlefishes, garpikes, bowfins, knifefishes, bony tongues, electric fishes, characins, cyprinids, catfishes, swamp eels, Siamese tigerfishes, cichlids, sleeper gobies, anabantids, snakeheads and spiny eels.
