Áll too often the great medieval cathedrals, parish churches and castles have been described as if they simply appeared by somé process of nature. John Harvey has focused on the fact that every building had a designer and builders. Over the past twenty-five years his resear ches have pioneered a new way of approaching medieval architecture. We see how from i ioo onwards the status of the master builder grew; how the 'lodges* were organized; how plans and working drawings were made, problems tackled, risks taken; how ideas travelled from country to country; and how the style we know as Gothic was born. Mr Harvey's enthusiasm for Gothic is as infectious as it is informed. From the twelfth century, with its revolution in techniques and its new sense of scale, he traces the progress of the style to its final sixteenth-century flowering in England, Francé, SpainandGermany.
