The Mechanization of the World Picture Pythagoras to Newton
This classic work, by one of the most profound interpreters of the history of mathematics and mechanics, is a detailed account of the origins and development of the physical sciences, including chemistry and astronomy, from the Pythagoreans of antiquity through the Middle Ages to the classical physicists of the seventeenth century, in whose crowning achievements the mechanistic world picture was finally realized. In an epilogue the author clarifies the meaning of the term "mechanistic" as applied to the scientist's concept of the physical world. He examines and rejects a number of ways of interpreting Newtonian science, and suggests a definition that highlights the differences between medieval and early modern "mechanics" and mathematical concepts.
