It is difficult to walk down a busy street in the f 990s without seeing or hearing a mobile phone. A growing number of us have become enthusiastic users of this most useful and convenient telecommunications device.
Here, for the first time, is the story behind the emergence of mobile telephony - from the early prototype systems trialled in the 1950s, through the first commercial networks during the '60s, to the installation of large nationwide networks in the 1980s. The book goes on to discuss the future impact that mobile telephony will have on our lives.
It traces the technological strides that made it all possible, and the impact that deregulation and liberalisation have had on the growth of the market, a growth which continues to exceed all forecasts.
The book draws on first-hand experience from interviews conducted worldwide with some of the key decision makers and innovators of the industry -Vodafone, McCaw, Mercury One-2-One, Cellnet, and the OFT - but is written from the perspective of one of the key players in this industry, the Swedish L M Ericsson Telephone Company.
