In Paris, just across the river from the Louvre, a new museum opens its doors: the Musée d'Orsay. Why one museum more, in a city that already has so many? What will it show? How is it organized? The answers will be found in this, the first book in the Musée d'Orsay's publishing programme. It presents the masterpieces of the museum's collections in over two hundred lavishly illustrated pages, with three hundred colour and monochrome plates, many of them full-page. Paintings, sculptures, photographs, objets d'art, architecture, town planning, opera and the graphic arts are represented alongside a text which traces the major developments in the history of art during the period — from 1848/50 to 1905/10 - which the museum sets out to cover. The main stress is laid on the highlights of the visitor's itinerary: painting from Courbet to Bonnard, with a prominent showing of the Impressionists from the former Musée du Jeu de Paume; sculpture from Rude and Carpeaux to Rodin and Maillol;...
