There is a peculiarly English talent for crime fiction, for revealing wickedness and darkness beneath the ordinary and innocent-seeming, the 'worm in the bud', the secret corruption at the heart of domestic life. In this anthology, containing twelve new and unpublished tales of mystery and murder, some of the authors may come from abroad, some from the Home Counties, but they are all among the finest of today's practitioners in the gentle art of crime fiction, and they all share that particular talent. All the writers represented here produce the excellence of style, the fine craftsmanship, and the profound and disturbing knowledge of human nature, which makes a good crime story often so much more satisfying a read than a mere adventure. Each has its cruelty, its quiet horror, its twist in the tail.
