THE NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART
situated about midway between the United States Capitol and the White House, was opened in 1941 and in little over a quarter century has become one of the foremost art museums of the world. Funds to build the Gallery were given by Mr. Andrew Mellon who also bequeathed his personal collection of paintings and sculpture to form a nucleus of the national collection. Subsequently, more than 200 generous donors have added to the original bequest. Not since the Napoleonic era have so many works of art of such high quality been assembled in so short a time.
The main emphasis is on painting and sculpture of Europe and America between the thirteenth and the twentieth century. Of special importance are the collections of Italian primitives, the Florentine and Venetian Renaissance masters, Rembrandt (represented by 23 canvases), El Greco, Van Dyck, Goya, and the world-famous collection of French Impressionist and post-Impressionist paintings assembled by Chester...
