The New Acropolis Museum
Located at the foot of the Acropolis and set amid the teeming contemporary metropolis of Athens, the New Acropolis IVIuseum Is an architectural tour de force—a building designed to display the greatest masterpieces of classical antiquity and to establish a dialogue across centuries with one of the world's most influential masterpieces, the Parthenon.
Designed by renowned international architect Bernard Tschumi, working with local associate architect Michael Photiadis of Athens, the museum joins sophisticated contemporary technology with the more traditional materials of concrete, marble, glass, and steel to illuminate the sculptural collections of the Parthenon and the archaeological finds of the temples and sanctuaries of the Acropolis hill. Among the most remarkable elements of the building is an ongoing archaeological excavation of artifacts dating from as early as the Neolithic Period that is incorporated into it as an exhibition gallery, penetrable by visitors, that is also visible through glass floors along the museum route. The result is a unique and unrepeatable structure that provides eloquent testimony to the accomplishments of classical civilization and to the dazzling feats of architecture today.

Illustrated with sumptuous color photographs as well as plans, drawings, and models, this book traces the creative process that led to the museum design and documents the complexities of its construction on a contested archaeological site. Its distinguished contributors offer reflections on the celebrated "content" of the museum—its priceless collections that detail the ideals, aspirations, and ways of life of the former citizens of Athens—and its difficult and often contested "context"; the singular career and bold preoccupations of its architect, Bernard Tschumi; and the myriad challenges encountered in both design and construction. Among the essays is an expansive construction chronology, accompanied by never-before-seen photographs documenting the procedures and decisions made on-site, which offers a window onto this unique cultural achievement.
