'THE NEW OFFICIAL GUIDE: JAPAN" has for many years been a byword in the tourist world. The present volume is a complete revision of the guidebook published in 1966, brought up to date by incorporating the many drastic changes that have taken place in Japan in various fields of activity since then.
The new guidebook is in a way an encyclopedia of Japan, containing as it does information about the entire country from one end to the other interestingly recorded in its 1,100 pages. No other single book about Japan is as comprehensive as "THE NEW OFFICIAL GUIDE: JAPAN." A veritable mine of useful information, it should prove an indispensable reference for anyone wanting to know the most authentic, up-to-date information about Japan as well as the most reliable companion available to visitors to these shores.
Besides more than a thousand and one facts of tourist interest, the book contains information on even the tiniest villages and hamlets and the oldest temples and shrines in the most remote corners of the country.

This guidebook is divided into two parts. The first part provides general information on Japan. It deals with such matters as routes to Japan; currency, weights and measures; seasonal attractions and annual functions; passport and visa regulations; entry and exit formalities; telegraph and telephone services; national parks and hot springs; the government and the people; the language; history; religion; economy; education of the people; and such aspects of culture as literature, drama (with detailed comments on noh, the puppet play and kabuki), movies, music, sports, garden design, tea ceremony and flower arrangement.
The second part provides travel information about Japan, with the country divided into eight sections: Honshu, the largest island of Japan, is separated into five sections—East Central, Central, West Central, Western and Northeastern Honshu; the Inland Sea and Shikoku; Kyushu and Hokkaido.
The guidebook is noteworthy for its excellent maps, providing a total of 72 maps and plans—36 in color and 36 in black and white.
The detailed index will, it is hoped, assist the reader in finding the answer to any question he may ask about things Japanese.
