THE NUCLEAR AXIS looks first at the rise of West Germany as a nuclear power: acceptance of Germany into NATO in 1955 was on condition that it pledged itself to renounce the manufacture on its territory of atomic, biological or chemical weapons. The book examines West German nuclear exports, and it focuses on the secret collaboration with South Africa. In particular, the authors provide documented evidence on the transfer of the West German jet-nozzle uranium enrichment technology to South Africa, which is one of the world's main suppliers of uranium. THE NUCLEAR AXIS examines the spread of nuclear know-how and technology to countries which have refused to sign the Nuclear NonProliferation Treaty, such as Israel and Brazil, and also to Iran, all involved in the nuclear conspirary with South Africa. The authors reveal the developing conflict in American foreign policy between politicians and arms control officials on the one hand, who are increasingly alarmed about South Africa's disruption of non-proliferation efforts, and American defence and intelligence interests on the other, who have been covertly encouraging the regime's ambitions. The involvement of France and the United Kingdom are also considered.

Zdenek Cervenka and Barbara Rogers have written an important book about the secret world of highlevel international military and political collaboration, a book which should be read by everyone concerned at the dramatically increasing hazards of the civil and military uses of nuclear technology. Document on cover: SWAPO Information Office ZDENEK CERVENKA, LL.D. (Prague), Ph.D. (Cantab), is associate research director of the Scandinavian Institute for African Studies at Uppsala, Sweden. Between 1961 and 1965 he served in the Ghana Civil Service in the Ministry of Justice and in the Office of the President. He has published several books, including The Unfinished Quest for Unity: Africa and the OAU (Julian Friedmann Publishers, 1977), and is a correspondent for Africa magazine in Europe, and writes regularly for Africa Contemporary Record. His interest in nuclear energy dates back to 1963 when he wrote a Ph.D. thesis on 'Legal Aspects of the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy'. Vissza
