This newest addition to the list of Oxford Companions undertakes to serve as a convenient one-volume reference to all aspects of American history and thought from colonial times to the present. Most of the articles are summaries of lives, events, and places significant in the founding and growth of the nation. The volume gives attention to social, political, and labour movements, and includes the fields of art, science, commerce, literature, education, and law. There are also articles dealing with sports and entertainments.
In all there are 4,710 entries, 1,8 3 j of which are biographical. In addition, there are 699 major cross references, and approximately !,500 other cross references within articles, indicated by small capitals.
