The Oxford-Duden Pictorial German-English Dictionary
'Duden's pictorial dictionary has always been a blessing, especially—as far as this reviewer is concerned— to buyers of household gadgets or garden tools. Anybody who has tried—in German— to ask for a coffee grinder with rotating blades or a ridging hoe will appreciate the problem. Duden solved it long ago by producing a dictionary containing clear illustrations of most things under the sun, with their German names.
'Now the Duden editorial staff of the Bibliographical Institute in Mannheim has collaborated with the German section of the Oxford University Press dictionary department to bring out a fully bilingual version with the German and English vocabulary printed on the same page.
'The dictionary is not only of value to cooks, gardeners and handy-persons. It is bang up to date with the technological age. its subjects include space flight, nuclear energy, offshore drilling and photo-typesetting. Altogether about 28,000 objects are illustrated and named, and 384 subject areas are covered. There is indeed something for everybody; the section on entertainment includes a picture of a striptease club, Animierdame (hostess) and all.'
