The Oxford Encyclopedia of Trees of the World is an authoritative work of reference prepared by an international team of thirty-nine authors. With its fine artwork and photographs, however, it is also an attractive introduction to the variety and beauty of the tree world for the general reader.
The first three chapters introduce the reader to the form, structure, and growth of trees; to the ecology of trees and forests and the world's main forest types; and to the management of forests and their products, the use of trees for amenity, and the battle that man wages against pests and diseases.
The major section of the book describes the principal trees of the world. It gives detailed coverage of those trees grown commercially or for ornament in cold, temperate, and warm temperate regions of the world, as well as for those forming part of the natural landscape. There are 149 genera entries (including all the known conifers), giving details of the structure, distribution, history,... Tovább

There are 149 genera entries (including all the known conifers), giving details of the structure, distribution, history, ecology, cultivation, diseases, and economic uses of their major species, varieties and cultivars. Sixty-six of the genera are illustrated with distribution maps and with composite artwork panels showing the main characteristics of more than 350 species. Tables give diagnostic details of over 900 species and several hundred cultivars, varieties and hybrids, and information is given about other candidates for tree status such as tree-ferns, cycads, and tree cacti, as well as palms and their allies.
The third section, organized regionally, discusses the value of the native trees of Asia, Africa, and America in terms of their commercial, local, and ornamental significance, while the final major section gives concise keys to the identificadon of the families and 149 genera described earlier.
The Encyclopedia contains a glossary, bibliography, and indexes to 1400 common and 2200 scientific names. The illustrations are a major feature of the work; over 500 species are illustrated, mostly in full colour, in more than 280 photographs and eighty-five artwork plates. Vissza
