The paradox of the Liar, the man who savs, "What I am now saving is falsé," was of concern to philosophers of antiquity; Kiletas of Cos was said to have perished from thinking about it, while one of the most notable references to this habit among Cretans appears in St. Paul's epistle to Ti tus. Since Bertrand Russell's discovery of the closely related paradox of Set Theory, the Liar has again been the subject of intense inquiry. This volume includes an historical introduction by Alan R. Anderson which discusses the various solutions of the past, and sketches programs for solving the dilemma. Bas van Fraassen applies his theory of supervaluation to the paradox; Hans Herzberger and John T. Kearns comment.
