Among all themes of icon painting none equals in importance that of the Passión. It leads from the Lord's entry into Jeru-salem to His resurrection. The liturgical ties of Eastern church art here become clearly evident. Most of the time the empty grave reminds the onlooker of the resurrection and the Easter event. The women are shown kneeling and every-thing else is, as a rule, but limited at with respect and piety and awe. The portrayal of the empty grave in its stark simplicity is extraordinarily impressive and is at once recognized as the message of the resurrection, »mediator of the magnificence and glory of Heaven and the sad and mournful earth.«
