The seventh edition of this world-renowned textbook of pharmacology, toxicology, and therapeutics has undergone a thorough updating of every chapter with respect to the mechanism of action and rational use of older drugs and the addition of important new therapeutic agents. However, readers of previous editions will find the same thoughtful organization, clarity of writing, and authority that have made "Goodman and Gilman" the standard book in the field. The philosophy and objectives of the earlier editions are continued throughout. As before, the three primary objectives are (1) the correlation of pharmacology with related medical sciences, (2) the reinterpretation of the actions and the uses of drugs from the viewpoint of important advances in medicine, and (3) the piacing of emphasis on the applications of pharmacodynamics to therapeutics. The revision of the text has been extensive. This is a reflection not only of the dozens of new therapeutic agents that have become available to the clinician during the past five years but alsó of tremendous advances in both basic pharmacology and the application of that knowledge to medical practice. There are new or thoroughly revised sections on calcium channel blockers, benzodiazepines, drug treatment of hyperlipoproteinemias, antiparasitic agents, neuroactive peptides, antiproliferative agents, prostaglandins and related autacoids, endorphins, enkephalins, antihypertensive agents, anti-inflammatory agents, drugs for ulcer therapy, antidepressants, antimicrobial agents, immunosuppressive agents, digitális substitutes, antiarrhythmic agents, second-generation sulfonylureas, neuromuscular blocking agents, anesthetics, opioid agonists, and many others. The seventh edition places major emphasis on pharmacokinetics, including thorough discussion of principles and practical guidelines for design of dosage regimens for individual patients. (Continued on back flap)
(Continued from front flap) In order to prevent undue expansion of the seventh edition, less dynamic or outmoded sections have been condensed or eliminated, to allow adequate consideration of all important pharmacological and therapeutic advances. In areas where the number of therapeutic agents available is confusingly large, major attention is focused on the wellestablished and effective prototypical drugs, while the numerous congeneric and second-order compounds receive comparatively brief descriptions. Newly approved drugs are fully discussed as well as those that are still in the developmental stage but show promise as future therapeutic agents. This seventh edition of Goodman and Gilman's The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics will prove invaluable to every student of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, the veterinary sciences, pharmacology, anesthesiology, toxicology, and the various medical specialties, as well as to graduates in any of these and allied fields of study, research, and practice.
