Of few books can it be said that they are so entertaining that their readers would like them to continue indefinitely. In the nature of things there was no reason why Charles Dickens should not have followed Mr Pickwick on the Rochester Road until death parted them for ever—for what reader would not jump at the chance of accompanying Sam Weller on another visit to the 'Old 'Un' to hear that archpatriot enlarge on matrimony, castigating that red-nosed jelly of a man the Rev. Mr. Stiggins, who, saturating himself with tea and toast, had alienated the affection of the 'Old 'Un's' wife. We should like to hear more about that remarkable sportsman, Winkle, whose shot found Mr Tupman instead of the breast of the wood pigeon. We should like further glimpses of the Fat Boy eternally spying on the amours in the arbour, when not sleeping off an over-indulgence to mince pie; or of Jingle on another runaway courtship, or to see the dust of conflict at...
