the poetry of t. s. eliot
D. E. S. MAXWELL 255. net
'In this book Mr Maxwell sets himself the task of tracing simultaneously the development of T. S. Eliot's thought and the influence of his thought on his style. In view of the complex sources from which Mr Eliot's thought and imagery are drawn, this is no mean task, and Mr Maxwell has not dodged any of the difficulties. Beginning with a general account of the state of English poetry before Eliot, he goes on to discuss with painstaking thoroughness Eliot's belief in the necessity for the discipline of tradition in poetry, his debt to the French symbolists, and to Dante, his deliberate seeking of the esoteric in poetry, the development of his beliefs to his acceptance of Christianity, and more specifically Anglo-Catholicism. Obviously Mr Maxwell's knowledge of Eliot's poetry is intimate and profound.' The Scotsman

'Here is a good, steady, careful book on Mr T. S. Eliot. . . . For the new reader who wants an overall introduction, this book can be commended an honest and scholarly essay in interpretation.'
Sir Ifor Evans in The Birmingham Post
' by far the most comprehensive and discriminating of the many treatises on that poet that have so far appeared. . . . This book of Mr Maxwell's can be warmly recommended. It deals with a difficult subject with skill and discrimination.' English Studies

Since the publication in 1942 of Little adding, T. S. Eliot, generally acknowledged to be the greatest living English poet, has directed his artistic energies towards the drama. This book, the first in Engfish to be devoted entirely to his plays, traces his attempts to re-estabfish poetry in the theatre of the English-speaking world.
It is intended less as an evaluation of Eliot's work in this field - a full-scale attempt at evaluation would be premature - than as an aid to understanding it. Although he has striven more and more to make his plays fully intelligible in the theatre, they do not yield all their richness there. The author of this book has assembled some of the most enlightening points from the rapidly growing body of criticism, but the book arose out of his own exploration of the plays in the theatre as well as in the study. He has directed several of them and he seeks to combine the insights which come from working on a play in the theatre with the careful analysis which belongs to the province of literary criticism. The book contains, as an aid to further study, the first full bibliography for this area of Eliot criticism.
