THE POWER OF MATHEMATICS
With an arbitrary standard of academic selective admission, going hand in hand with abstract teaching that is still too formalistic, mathematics casts a strange light over the other sciences. Take physics, with which it maintains a privileged relationship, but also biology, not to mention economics. Mathematicians do not confine themselves to providing a language or tools for other disciplines. Their exchanges are infinitely more productive and encourage new ways of thinking.
Deep misunderstandings continue to overshadow this exciting research and create real uneasiness: People confuse mathematical creativity with computer calculation, invention of new theorems with application of rules of logic. Beyond the traditional divisions (geometry, algebra, calculus, etc.), an important event is, nevertheless, unfolding before our eyes: The unity of mathematics is, finally, being achieved. What will be the... Tovább

What will be the consequences?
Refusing to resort to the opaque formulas of the experts, but also to indulge in simplifications, metaphors, or those "false friends," which are examples, Moshe Flato responds in simple and strong terms to that essential question: What is the nature of the power of mathematics?
About the Author
Moshe Flato is professor of mathematics at the University of Burgundy (Dijon) and has taught at numerous foreign universities, including Geneva, Kyoto, and UCLA. He presides over the Scientific Council of the UAP, which he created with Yvette Chassagne, and edits several international scientific journals, including Letters in Mathematical Physics, which he founded.
