About the series
The Making of the Past
The Making of the Past is a new series designed to provide a complete survey of the early history of the world as revealed by archaeology and related disciplines. Its subject is a new history, the making of a new past, freshly uncovered and reconstrucced in recent years by skilled specialists. Beautifully illustrated with photographs, many in full colour, and with maps, diagrams and line drawings including reconstructions, the series will be completely authoritative and up to date, while losing nothing of the excitement of recent discoveries about the ancient past.

About this volume
The Rise of Civilization
David Oates Joan Oates
i6o illustrations, 123 in colour
Here is an authoritative account of the first agriculture and domestication of animals during the Neolithic period, and the earliest villages and towns, leading to the beginnings of civilization in the Near East. The authors begin by surveying the geography and cHmate of the area and the development from the first settlements dependent on agriculture to the appearance of hterate urban communities in the Near East. They answer the question : why did developments take place in certain areas, and why did they lead to the first urban life specifically in Mesopotamia and Egypt ? A survey of the work of early explorers such as Petrie, Garstang and Campbell Thompson and the discovery of the earliest settlements leads to a discussion of modern archaeological techniques and current problems and arguments. The second half of the book summarizes the present state of our knowledge of trade, economy, technology and the structure of society in this period as revealed by the work of archaeologists from the earliest villages, through the beginnings of irrigated agriculture, to Mesopotamia on the threshold of civilization in 3000 bc. Four visual stories describe the choosing and excavation of the prehistoric site of Choga Mami, the excavations and finds at Çatal Hiiyiik and Warka, and the art and craft of prehistoric pottery.
