After an introductory chapter on Roman civiKzation, the author traces the history of antiquarianism through the Renaissance to the development of Roman archaeology in the present day. Chapters follow on the Etruscans-'that not-so-mysterious people'-the Romans in Italy, from the foundation of the City till the second century AD, and their expansion abroad-at its widest extent from Morocco in the west to Armenia in the east and from Britain in the north to Upper Egypt in the south.
