miscellany of cultures and civilizations, as well as
empires, deities and temporal rulers. Those ancient
tales in which we learn of glory and bravery, splendid
victories and heroic defeats, of travels and wars, love
and jealousy, lies and deceit, were all set within the
Mediterranean basin. A seemingly infinite expanse of
blue, the shade of which varies and is never quite the
same in any two places, forms the vast mirror of the
Mediterranean, the mightiness and mysteriousness of
which for millennia has overwhelmed individuals and
even whole nations. Lord Byron's Childe Harold
accepted this sea as the part of the planet where man's
power and mastery over nature suddenly cease to exist.
