U.S. iis.^'i CAN.
In Spain lives a big and strong bull whose name is Ferdinand. Unlike the other young bulls, Ferdinand does not like to fight. He would rather sit in the shade of his favorite cork tree and smell the flowers. And he does just that, until the day when a bumblebee and some men from the Madrid bullfights give gende Ferdinand a chance to be the most ferocious star of the corrida—and the most unexpected comic hero.
This classic tale of a peaceable bull has been a favorite of children for more than fifty years. Translated into over sixty languages, Ferdinand's popularity has spread woddwide. Of Ferdinand's fame, author Munro Leaf said simply, "I wrote 'Ferdinand' in the hope it would amuse [Robert Lawson] enough to create pictures that would provide a quiet laugh. . . .Now I believe in laughter. There is no better passport through the world than a smile and a laugh."

Munro Leaf's
first children's book was Grammar Can Be Fun. It achieved wide success which continued with his other "Can be Fun" books. His most popular books are the two he collaborated on with his friend Robert Law-son, The Story of Ferdinand and Wee Gillts. Because of his work's international appeal, Mr. Leaf and his wife Margaret were invited on three twenty-six country tours under the auspices of the U.S. State Department, giving talks to children and to local educators and librarians. Mr. Leaf died in 1976.
Robert Lawson
worked for many years as a commercial artist, winning the prestigious Taylor Arms Prize of the Society of American Etchers in 1931. He received equal acclaim when he turned to children's books. Mr. Lawson is the only person ever to receive both the Newbery and Caldecott Awards, for They Were Strong and Good and Rabbit Hill respec-dvely. Robert Lawson died in 1957.
