"The Thing Itself is a small masterpiece—and 'small' only because of its brevity, not its scope."
—Julia Keller, Chicago Tribune
In The Thing Itself, cultural critic Richard Todd examines the pursuit of authenticity in places and objects, in politics and ideas, and in ourselves. Troubled by the lack of substance in contemporary life, Todd scrutinizes a world in which everything—from refrigerators to presidential candidates—claims to be "real." Recognizing himself as a member of the culture he is criticizing, he is equally skeptical of himself as he searches his memory and the world around him for something real to which he can hold fast. Through eloquent and tightly joined prose, Todd reveals his very human desire to be a real person in a real world. Full of insight and wit, The Thing Itself paints a portrait of modern American life with equal measures of humor and hope.
"[Anl eloquent meditation." "Both charming and disarming."
—O, The Oprah Magazine —Vanity Fair
