In his long, industrious and very active life Nicolaus Copernicus travelled a great deal. His first journey of any length took him to Cracow where he went to study at the University. Journeys followed to more distant parts, again to study, this time in Italy.
Upon his return to Poland from Italy Copernicus first spent several years in Lidzbark and then - with one interruption when he stayed in OI-sztyn - he spent the rest of his life in Frombork. He travelled extensively at this period over the territories of the Polish Kingdom, particularly so in the northern regions. Many indeed are the towns which lay claim to being called a "Coper-nican" town, that is, one he had visited. The great astronomer, however, paid his most memorable visits to Toruii, Cracow, Lidzbark, Olsztyn and Frombork.
Copernicus was most intimately associated with these five towns, which is why they are regarded as the principal Copernican towns in Poland. All these towns, and other localities which Copernicus visited at one time or other, are linked together in a route for tourists, called the Copernican Route. The route leads through towns notable for their historical and architectural monuments, little towns full of charm, through landscapes of exceptional beauty.
We invite you to come with us on a journey along the Copernican Route!
