I This volume is a comprehensive history | of one of the world's great institutions J of higher education. The University of California: A Pietorial History opens with abrief descrip-ftion of the development of the statewide JUniversity, f ollowed by sections devoted i.o each of the campuses, in order of the | late of their founding. Depicted are not Jjfely campus milestones but present-day tfeeijps intended to convey the distinctive f'sense of place" that characterizes each pof the nine locales.
J A volume of immense variety, it pro-S/ides an unprecedented panorama of the centennial history of the University. The lltory is all here: the uncertain begin-bings in Oakland, the building years at | Berkeley, the "experiment" of a second íreneral campus at Los Angeles, four ¦ iiundred miles away, and finally the {Btatewide expansion of today, with its l.ine campuses and outlying engineering (ind scientiíic research laboratories and Itgricultural field stations. Vividly seen líre the people, places and events that líiaped the University of California dur-Ing its first 100 years.
.The photographs were carefully
selected on the basis of their historical significance and pictorial excellence by the editors who examined literally thousands of photographs in archivalj collections of each campus, newspaperi libraries, the files of historical societies,| and priváté holdings. Many are here i reproduced for the first time. Textualg material helps convey the sweep of thej University's exeiting history and provides many colorful and authenticjf details.
As a land-grant institution, the Uni-versity of California has long been heav-ily committed to public service, and many | of the extensive contributions made over { the years to the state, nation and world, are depicted.
Allan Nevins has written: "The com-pletion of a century of busy life by the University of California is an event of J national importance. Somé would call this institution the leading American 1 university. Whether it deserves this titlef or not, it has done more as a statewidell university to set a new pattern in higherl education than any of its sisters on the American landscape."
Here, for the enjoyment of alumnij students and friends is a graphic presen- f tation of that University's first century ? of growth and achievement.
I
The compilers are at home with théiifj subject. Albert G. Pickerell, Professor of | Journalism, Berkeley, alsó served a num-|f ber of years as the University's Directorl of Information. May Dornin served as|| the head of the Department of ArchivesJ f University Library, Berkeley, from! 1946 to 1964.

The University of California: A Pictorial History illus-trates one himdred years of humán and institutional de-velopment of which all Californians can be justly proud. This book gives life and form to the University's Centen-nial theme—a tribute to the people of California—and eaptures that spirit of challenge and service whieh has typified this state and its University.
