The romance that flourishes in this tropical region of forest and savannah is violent, often feverish and unorthodox. Snakes and armadillos lurk in the liana-hung gloom, parrots screech, lepers in dominoes mingle with the carnival masques and challenges are exchanged under chandeliers. All the passions and feuds of the island culminate at the great Mardi Gras Ball of the Count de Serindan de la Charce; eighteenth-century statures posture on balustrades while the volcano overhead smokes menacingly; and our ears can almost detect the sound of those ghostly violins and vanished dancers.
