Sir Rex Niven began writing 'The War of Nigerian Unity' while it still raged, and at a time when he felt that the public were being given by the world press, radio and television a distorted impression of the causes and course of the conflict, due to the emotions and controversy it naturally aroused among the participants and their sympathisers abroad. As the war went on, and the sufferings of the civilian population in the war areas increased, what had begun as a Nigerian domestic^ conflict became the subject of intense emotion and bitter argument throughout the world, dividing, both governments and peoples.
In this book Sir Rex has written a reasoned, dispassionate account of the background to the war, of the various political, tribal and economic stresses that precipitated its outbreak, and of the course of the struggle itself. He describes the shock of the first coup, the growth of resentment, the second coup, the move to secession, the desperate .and decisive fighting round Ore, the advances of the Federal troops, the prolonged resistance of the rebels in the 'Biafran' enclave, and their final collapse. There are also interesting accounts of the fruitless peace talks, the activities of the international charities, 'Biafran' propaganda, the genocide myth, and the financing of the war.
This straightforward, factual record is an important contribution to the understanding of that war which came so near to destroying the unity of the most populous state in Africa.
Sir Rex Niven is the author of many books on Nigeria. For over forty years he worked in Nigeria, firstly as an officer in the British Colonial Service, including several years as the President and then Speaker of the Northern House of Assembly, and, after Independence, as a Commissioner for Special Duties with the late Sardauna.
