Samuel Butler's only novel is a masterpiece. In this semi-autobiographical account of Victorian upbringing, Butler is by
turns excoriatingly witty, keenly observant, interestingly philosophical, but above all, astonishingly revealing about the habits of mind, the manners, the morals and the hypocrisy of an age to which modern politicians turn their rose-bespectacled gaze.
Though largely written in the 1870's, it was not published until 1903, the year after Butler's death. Even then, it was so revolutionary in its attitudes, that it did not come to be recognized for the work of art it is until after the Great War. It tells of Ernest Pontifex, his tyrannical clergyman father, his mother who stoops to every kind of betrayal and moral blackmail, his odious brother and sister and his efforts to escape the stifling web of the family and make his faltering way in the world.
