The Winchester Sk>ry covers tnaior events in the
city s past, from its early roles its King Alfred s
Saxon capital and the capital of England to its
regrowth in the last century It includes the
fascinating stories of the Old Minster and St
Swithun; the Norman Conquest and later aspects
of medieval life, including the international St
Giles's Fair; Wolvesey Palace and the family in
fighting of Stephen and Matilda; the castle and
the Great Hall; William of Wykeham and Win
I Chester College; and the religious turmoil of the
16th and 17th centuries including the threatened
demolition of the cathedral.
Also included are accounts of the return of
the church' after Cromwell and the story of Royal
Winchester with Charles II and his mistresses;
