Essex County was the center of the terrible witchcraft hysteria that blighted the English countryside from the mid-1560's to the close of the seventeenth century. This earned Essex, for all time, the epithet of "The Witch County."
Essex was rural, full of superstitious backwaters, strongly ruled by church and state, and the belief in witchcraft was more pronounced than in any other rural area. Wherever one turned, men, women, and children were put to death or imprisoned for the slightest hint of witchcraft. What passed for justice fell on the accused with barbaric savagery.
