When out with children, shopping or getting petrol at the garage, there may not be time to answer their questions, to explain what is happening or how something that has attracted their attention, works. In these lively and colourful pictures, there is plenty to talk about. Child and adult can share the experience of identifying familiar objects, discovering the names of new items, working out what is happening in each picture. The names below the large pictures are a mixture of frequently used words and less familiar ones. (The vocabulary has been drawn from a computer word frequency study.) The small illustrations have captions describing what is happening in each picture. The accompanying questions provide a further stimulus for discussion, helping the child to reason and predict.
