This remarkc±>le book explodes the myths about the blue-collar voter which have been misleading politicians, professors, and even unions for the last decade. Andrew Levison draws a jolting profile of the blue-collar worker as today's forgotten man and shows how his numbers are underestimated by sociologists, his vote misinterpreted by politicians, and his pressing problems ignored by the government.
Workers perceive their lot as underprivileged and themselves as victims of a political con. For two generations Washington promised them a better life for themselves and their children, but Levison shows graphically how few, comparatively, of the goodies of the good times workers have received. In recent elections many workers have expressed their discontent in ways which have profoundly disturbed many liberals, but Levison makes clear that actual working-class attitudes are far from the cliché of the hard hat and Archie Bunker.
The Working-Class Majority is already causing a stir in political, labor and opinion-making circles. Andrew Levison feels the future political role of blue-collar workers is the central issue in American politics, of more profound importance than Watergate and the energy crisis. He suggests that a new transforming political alliance of work-

Andrew Levison is research associate of the Martin Luther King, Jr., Center for Social Change in Atlanta, Georgia. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin, his work for the center ranges from researching and writing studies commissioned by HEW and NIMH to voter registration and campaigning. He has had considerable practical experience as a blue-collar worker both here and in Latin America and first put forward the thesis he develops in this book in an article in Th6 Notion. The finished manuscript so impressed The New Yorker they bought prepublication rights.
