CYPRUS, at the eastern corner of the Mediterranean, is a natural crossroads linking the continents of Asia, África and Europe. Historic routes and civilisations converge at this node, made European by the influences of Greek intellectual achievement and ethos. CYPRUS, at the eastern corner of the Mediterranean, is a natural crossroads linking the continents of Asia, África and Europe. Historic routes and civilisations converge at this node, made European by the influences of Greek intellectual achievement and ethos. Cyprus, a small geographic entity, has grown in stature as a result of these influences and her quality of life has expanded accordingly. Although prey to many outside pressures, she retains her own character and rich traditions and has much to offer in return to those who shaped her. Every visitor of good will has a sense of being at home, a sense of familiarity with the universal concept of what is appropriate in life, irrespective of trends and customs in his own country. Since earliest times the Greek face of Cyprus has been apparent and this in the course of time acquired a serenity, brought to it by Christianity. These Greek and Christian values she intends to preserve, despite the difficulties of the present hour. This book, through the paintings of John Corbidge, an Englishman long at home in Cyprus, and through the poetry of Theodosis Nicolaou, a Greek Cypriot, interweaving the strands of his poetic inheritance, reveals a humble and tentative portrait of this little microcosm. i I \m
