Following a thorough introduction to the country, this superbly illustrated book takes the reader on a fascinating Journey through New Zealand, starting in the far north and moving south via the Bay of Islands. The journey continues through the bustling city of Auckland, situated on two harbours, and south into the pastoral country ofWaikato, before exploring the forests and secluded bays ofthe Coromandel Peninsula, which overlooks the marine playground of the Hauraki Gulf The Kiwifruit country ofthe Bay of Plenty leads into the dramatic landscapes ofthe Volcanic Plateau in the interior, and eastward lies remote Eastland. From here the route moves southward via Taranaki to Wellington, the capital city and main ferry route to the South Island. The South Island is approached through the drowned valleys of the Marlborough Sounds. From the wide beaches of its northern shores, then down into the pastoral countryside ofthe east, coast the next stage ofthe route climbs through the high Mackenzie Country to reach its climax in the towering peaks ofthe Southern Alps. The last phase ofthe journey explores the wild scenic beauty ofthe sparsely inhabited West Coast. Otago and Southland, a paradise for wildlife which encompasses glaciers, clear lakes, sheer fiords and deep sounds, imposing waterfalls and deserted beaches.
New Zealanders have a distinct identity shaped by the Polynesian and European cultures which colonized this wild and distant land. This is a nation characterized by a spirit of innovation and ingenuity bred from a frontier history, and this has shaped its public life: it was the first country to give women the vote and the first to implement old age pensions. /Is illustrated throughout the book. New Zealanders have always enjoyed unparalleled access to the great outdoors. Today, both locals and visitors to New Zealand can participate in a great variety of adventure sports - from rock climbing to skiing, diving, jet boating, bungy jumping, white-water rafting, paragliding and many more.
